We live in Alora in the Guadalhorce valley, on the edge of the village.
Last week while walking the dogs I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a Wildcat in the olive grove above the finca - this was early in the morning.
Coming home this evening we saw the same cat cross the road and pause obligingly on a rock beside the track.
How can I know if it really was a wildcat? It appeared to be slightly larger than a domestic cat with a thicker looking coat than normal, it had an almost fluffy, heavily striped tail ending with a black band.
Can anyone tell me what to look for and even if there are wildcats in this area?

Hi Heidi,
yes, there probably are Felix sylvestris in your area of Andalucia, the odd thing though is this one posed for you which is not normal.... They are normally very shy and rarely seen...
Have a look at this link for a picture showing the siloette and in the terribly cute picture of the kitten you can see the rings down the tail ending ina black tip....

A Google image search for Felix sylvestris will help as well.
Maybe you could carry a camera with you next time? If you do get an image please feel free to send it to me for identification... My contact email is in my profile...
