Don't miss our shoreguide to the Canary Islands. These small volcanic chunks
of Spain off the northwest coast of Africa pull together marine life from
tropical and from temperate seas. The resulting mix of open ocean and shore
creatures are a delight for scuba divers, whale-watchers, birders, fishermen

. Spanish bird atlas published -
A new publication, presented today in Madrid, shows the distribution,
population and threats to the 337 bird species which breed in Spain. The
Atlas of Breeding Birds in Spain, has been compiled by birdwatchers,
produced by SEO/Birdlife and financed by the Ministry of Environment. Date:

. Peaks of Picos hike -
The Torrecerredo mountain club of Gijón, Asturias, is conducting the sixth
edition of its crossing of the Picos de Europa. The week-long trek starts on
12th July and includes the highest peaks of the three massifs. Details of

. Birds, plains and planes in Ciudad Real -
A delegation of east-European ornithologists financed by the RSPB visited
the province of Ciudad Real last week. The visit was organised to illustrate
conservation strategies and issues for the benefit of countries which are
soon due to join the EU. Delegates visited Cabañeros National Park and the
Campo de Calatrava plains. This last area is of special importance for
steppe birds, such as Great bustards, which will be affected if
controversial plans for a proposed private airport go ahead. Date: July 04,

. Government buys Los Escullos, in Cabo de Gata -
The estate of Los Escullos, in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park (Almería) has
been purchased by the Andalusian branch of the Ministry of Environment. The
estate includes 10 km of seafront, from San Jose to the Playa del Arco.
Officials say this will improve protection for the area which is popular
destination for holidaymakers and harbours interesting volcanic rock
formations and rare wildlife and flora. Endangered plants in the area
include Androcymbium europaeum, close to extinction, Teucrium charidemi and
an endemic species, Verbascum charidemi. Date: July 01, 2003 Source:
