------- From the editor's desk
If you have a day or two to spare in Madrid and wish to escape the bustle of
the capital and see something of the local countryside, head for the
Guadarrama mountains. As generations of Madrileño hikers will testify, the
massiff may be modest in size (Peñalara at 2,428 m. is the highest peak) but
it is wonderfully scenic: picturesque granite boulders, remains of ancient
glaciers, great forests and even cross-country winter skiing - all just one
hour away from the city. Thank you, Norman Martin, for the reminder...

. Recognition for San Andrés island -
San Andrés, a small outcrop of volcanic rock in the sea near Carboneras
(Almería) has just been declared a National Monument due to its rich marine
life and archeological interest. Date: September 13, 2003 Source: Indalia
. Sea kayaking in Ibiza and Formentera -
Group sea kayak excursions are planned in Ibiza and Formentera between the
4th and 9th of October. Destinations include the islets of Es Vedra and Es
Vedranell, coast trips in Cap Llentrisca, Es Cubells and Ses Covetes, in
Ibiza, and a complete 4-day tour around Formentera. The events, organised by

. Lynx relocation plans -
Over the next five years the Andalusian government plans to capture a total
30 young Iberian lynx for relocation and for captive breeding. Lynx will be
caught in Doñana and in the Cardeña and Andujar hills of Sierra Morena.
Reintroductions will take place in the Sierra de los Alcornocales, Cadiz,
where lynx will be able to prey on the healthy local rabbit population. The
Iberian lynx is the most endangered cat on the planet, Environment
Councillor Fuensanta Coves reminded journalists during a recent briefing.
She also announced the most recent lynx population estimates, placing 50 to
70 individuals in Doñana and 110 between the provinces of Córdoba and Jaen.
32 lynx cubs were born in Andalucía this year, 6 in Doñana and 26 in Sierra
Morena. Date: September 06, 2003 Source: El Mundo
. Forests feel the heat -
The heat wave and low rainfall caused many problems for Spain's forests this
Summer, not all as obvious as the widespread fires. Oak and beech trees in
the Pyrenees, Montes de Toledo and Cordillera Cantábrica lost their leaves
in August, 6 to 8 weeks earlier than expected. WWF/Adena warns that weakened
trees face disease from fungus, bacteria and insects, and it urges the
government to take a more active role in fighting climate change. Date:
