. Uncork a bottle for Spanish wildlife -
Adena/WWF is asking consumers to insist on genuine cork in their bottles of
wine and bubbly this Christmas. Spain is one of the world's main producers
of cork, an environmentally sound product of the country's 500,000 hectares
of cork oak forest. WWF's Raquel Gómez points out that no trees are felled
to extract cork - the outer bark is carefully peeled off every nine years -
and a tradition dating thousands years could be threatened if quality cork
stoppers were substituted by plastic or metal substitutes. The biological
diversity of the 'dehesa' or cork oak forest is on occasion comparable to
that of tropical rainforests and it provides a traditional livelihood for
people - extensive farming and agriculture, charcoal, hunting, edible
fungi - and for wildlife such as the endangered Spanish lynx or Imperial
eagle. Date: December 17, 2003 Source: WWF/Adena

. International wildlife photos in Vigo -
Winning entries for the 2003 edition of the Wildlife Photographer of the
Year competition (organised by the BBC and the London Natural History
Museum) will be exhibited up to 18th January in the Centro Social Caixanova
in Vigo, Galicia. Date: December 11, 2003 Source: Axencia Galega de Noticias
