. Ninety bears, two problems -
Most of Spain's remaining brown bears - 70 to 90 animals in northern Spain's
Cantabrian mountains - are split into two groups, each with its own set of
problems. This is the main conclusion of a report by Miguel Delibes, Javier
Naves and Eloy Revilla, recently published in the journal "Conservation
Biology". The bears of Asturias have access to quality food and breed well,
but are more likely to be killed by man. The bears of Palencia and Leon live
in remote areas with less human influence. However, their habitat is poor,
they have more trouble finding food and they produce less young. Sadly
neither habitat provides conditions for low mortality and high birth rate,
the traditional recipe for population growth. Date: February 02, 2004

. Cormorants - common once again -
A record 75,000 cormorants now overwinter in Spain, according to a census
coordinated by SEO/Birdlife last year. This is about 15% of the total
European population, and twice as many as were counted in a similar census
seven years ago. The birds are now a common winter sight in marshes, rivers
and reservoirs throughout Spain. This is considered an indication of the
general health of the European population of these birds, which plummeted in
the 1940s due to human persecution and to the effects of pollutants. Date:
