Things aren't looking good for the Iberian lynx. A recent report puts the
total wild population at maybe only 135 individuals, earlier this month yet
another was killed by a car (near Gibraleón, Huelva) and scientists say it
is still early days for the Doñana captive breeding program. But this gem of
Spain's wildlife continues to inspire many, including artist and
self-confessed lynxmaniac Enrique Navarro. Click to see our latest

. Iberian lynx near extinction, warns Euro-MP report -
The world's most endangered big cat - the Iberian Lynx - is on the verge of
extinction, according to a study commissioned by Green Party MEP Caroline
Lucas. The 60 page document, launched recently in the European Parliament ,
includes the following conclusions: (1) It is currently possible to confirm
a wild population of only 135 animals, of which just 28 are breeding
females. (2) Although there were more than fifty populations just over a
decade ago, today there are just two breeding populations. (3) Persecution
of the lynx is such that average life expectancy may be as low as 5 years
(the normal average is 13 years) (4) The last 'viable' population could now
be seriously affected by a motorway proposal (5) The only other breeding
population, in and around the Doñana National Park, is now no longer thought
to be viable because it is too small and is expected to eventually become
extinct, even without more human disturbance. Date: May 17, 2004 Source:
