. Week-end flight of Madrid's eagles -
Heavy week-end traffic drives away Spanish imperial eagles from roadside
hunting grounds near Madrid. This is the main conclusion of a study
published in the June edition of scientific journal Conservation Biology.
Spanish researchers studied a 19 km raptor-rich portion of the M-501 road,
between Brunete and Navas del Rey. They identified 18 different species of
birds of prey, including highly endangered Spanish imperial eagles. On
weekends, the traffic load nearly doubled from about 5,000 to 10,000
vehicles/day, and sightings of the eagle dropped by four-fifths. The same
was true for two other endangered raptors, the European black vulture and
the griffon vulture. But even though there are fewer than 400 Spanish
imperial eagles left, the Madrid Autonomous Region is planning to enlarge
M-501 so it can accommodate high-speed traffic. This plan goes against the
recommendation of the government's Environmental Agency. Date: May 31, 2004

. Chinijo archipelago proposed as national park -
The Canarian archipelago of Chinijo, to the north of Lanzarote, has been
proposed as a future national park by WWF/Adena. The area has a wealth of
wildlife, with 228 fish species, 75 per cent of Lanzarote's endemic plants
and the second largest breeding colony in the world of Cory's shearwater,
and rare seabird which is still hunted locally. Chinijo is also home to
endangered birds of prey such as Barbary falcon, Osprey and Egyptian
vulture. WWF says the natural resources of Chinijo are being plundered and
need urgent protection. Date: May 25, 2004 Source: WWF/Adena

. 25 wild plants lost in a decade -
Up to 25 species of Spanish wild plants may have disappeared in the last 10
years. This is one of the conclusions of the international congress on
Mediterranean Plants currently being held in Valencia. Congress secretary
Jaime Güemes said Spain is home to between 10,000 and 12,000 different
plants, many of them endangered by pollution, coastal changes and building
pressures. Date: May 17, 2004 Source: El Mundo
