. Natural park congress -
The 10th national congress of natural parks, ESPARC 2000, was opened today
in Cuenca by the Environment Minister, Cristina Narbona. 150 managers and
experts meet to discuss the future of Spain's protected natural areas. A
specific concern, said Narbona, is the application of the Natura 2000
network in Spain, which will effectively increase the current 8% of
protected land to nearly a quarter of the total territory. Funding is also
an issue, if Spain is to become Europe's great ecological reserve. Date:

. 450 blue flags for Spanish beaches -
The International Blue Flag Jury has awarded 450 blue flags to Spanish
beaches and marinas in Spain this year. This is 30 more than in 2003, due
mainly to cleanup operations on Galician beaches following the Prestige oil
spill. The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at
beaches/marinas, it operates mainly in Europe and South Africa, and is is
owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for
Environmental Education (www.blueflag.org). Date: June 03, 2004 Source:
