------- From the editor's desk

Compared to the popular northern route to Santiago, the Vía de la Plata is
definitely the road less travelled. This pilgrim route from Sevilla is less
publicised, infrastructure is poorer and it can get a tad hot in summer. In
short, it is more like hard work. So, why bother? Experiencing Spain's
wildest quarter, nearly 1,000 km along north-south fringe bordering with
Portugal, first-hand and in slow motion is probably reason enough. Add to
that the rich cultural heritage of towns like Sevilla, Mérida, Cáceres,
Salamanca and Zamora and you have a rare walking recipe. Are you up for it?

. Tourism blamed for desertification -
Desertification is worse in southern Spain than anywhere else in Europe, but
it cannot simply be blamed on the hot climate. According to ecologists, the
problem has been hugely aggravated by the local farming and tourist
industries. For example, the annual water consumption of one golf club alone
can be equivalent to that of a town of 12,000 people. These days in Malaga,
where there are an estimated 10,000 illegal wells, you have to dig an
average of 100m underground before finding any water. "We've launched a
10-year plan to combat desertification, including the reforestation of
mountains and financial aid for farmers " says Cesar Vicente Fernandez, of
the Junta de Andalucia's department for environmental affairs. "But it's all
a waste of time if people don't co-operate." Date: September 03, 2004

. Ebro transfer substitute plan unveiled -
Environment minister Cristina Narbona has just presented the plans which
will substitute the Ebro transfer project proposed by the previous
government. The new "A.G.U.A." programme includes a set of 105 urgent
measures to take 1,063 m3 of water to the autonomous communities of
Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía, at a cost of 3,900 euros. Much
use will be made of marine desalination plants which environment Narbona
says are much more efficient that they were 10 years ago. A public website
explains the new measures: www.mma.es/agua/ Date: September 02, 2004 Source:

. Another lynx road kill -
A 20 month-old Iberian lynx was found dead at km 13 of the track between
Villamanrique de la Condesa (Sevilla) and El Rocío (Huelva). The corpse was
collected by technicians from the Iberian Lynx Conservation Programme for
post-mortem tests and extraction of tissue samples. Date: September 02, 2004
