------- From the editor's desk

A couple of years ago we published a short guide to Málaga's birdlife which
came as a surprise to many. Indeed, it is unfortunate that crowded beaches
and sunburned tourists are often the only image associated to this diverse
province! Today, Nicola Wright brings us a personal account of living and
birding in La Axarquía, one of Málaga's more remote hill regions...

------- News Briefs

. G-hooks could help sea turtles -
Oceana is campaigning to reduce accidental catches of loggerhead and
leatherback turtles at both ends of their area of distribution: the American
coasts and the Mediterranean. It is estimated that Spanish longline fishing
vessels operating out of the of the ports of Alicante, Murcia, Almeria and
Mallorca catch more than 20,000 sea turtles a year. These boats, known
locally as "marrajeros" were traditionally used to catch sharks but now
concentrate their efforts on swordfish. Oceana is suggesting a modification
to the fishing gear, including a change from the current J-shaped hooks to
others in a G-shape, so that sea turtles do not become caught on them. Date:

. Prestige oil salvage complete -
The Prestige oil tanker which sunk off the coast of Galicia in November 2002
is now empty, said government vice president María Teresa Fernández de la
Vega in a recent press conference. A total 13,000 tons of oil have been
collected from the vessel in the deep-sea salvage operation. The government
also said that environmental restoration projects are now complete although
long-term effects on the sea-bottom will continue to be monitored. Date:

. Bigger buffer zone for Doñana -
The Parque Natural de Doñana - a green belt surrounding the national park -
is to be increased by 1,245 hectares. The new contributing areas belong to
the villages of Almonte, Lucena del Puerto, Moguer, Aznalcázar and
Villamanrique de la Condesa and bring Doñana's total protected surface to
53,851 hectares. Date: September 17, 2004 Source: Diario de Cadiz
