 . Ebro Delta project gets 20,000 euro Ashoka prize -
The sustainable development of paddy fields in the Ebro Delta to provide a
refuge for birds and employment for humans has been rewarded by
international NGO Ashoka with one of its annual prizes. This year
SEO/Birdlife's Riet Vell 60 hectare estate produced 120 tons of organic rice
and received over 2,000 birdwatching visitors. The reserve also has an
active volunteer programme to help with scientific, education and

. Natural history trips around Madrid -
The Community of Madrid is organising a series of free guided natural
history tours this month, as part of the IV Science Week of Madrid 2004.
Excursions are planned to the Casa de Campo, Monte de El Pardo and Parque de

. Regional management for national parks -
The Spanish high court has ruled that the autonomous communities will handle
day-to-day management of national parks (parques nacionales). This will
substitute the current system, with joint management between the regional
and central government. There are at present 14 parques nacionales, the
highest possible form of legal protection for a natural area in Spain: Picos
de Europa (Asturias, Cantabria and León), Ordesa y Monte Perdido (Huesca),
Teide (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Caldera de Taburiente (Santa Cruz de
Tenerife), Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici (Lleida), Doñana (Huelva
and Sevilla), Tablas de Daimiel (Ciudad Real and Toledo), Timanfaya (Las
Palmas), Garajonay (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Archipiélago de Cabrera (Palma
de Mallorca), Cabañeros (Ciudad Real), Sierra Nevada (Granada and Almería),
Islas Atlánticas (Pontevedra and A Coruña). Date: November 15, 2004 Source:

. Glossy ibis is back to stay -
Doñana's population of Glossy ibis, the largest in Western Europe, has
increased from under 10 pairs in 1996 to over 600 pairs in 2004. The new
figures, released by Andalucia's autonomous department of environment,
confirm a healthy comeback for this species in the Guadalquivir marshes.
