. In the footsteps of Don Quixote -
The countdown has started for the opening in 2005 of the 'Route of Don
Quixote", an ambitious 2,500 km footpath which will allow walkers, cyclists
and horse-riders to visit the villages and countryside of La Mancha, as
described in the famous novel by Cervantes. The projected green tourist
route, the longest of its kind in Europe, is part of the regional
government's celebrations to mark the 4th centenary of the novel's
publication. A general route description is available in the official
centenary website: http://www.donquijotedelamancha2005.com/ruta.php Date:
December 20, 2004 Source: Revista de Junta de Castilla La Mancha

. Spain's seafish overfished -
Hake and monkfish fishing grounds off northern Spain are near collapse
unless urgent measures are taken, says marine conservation group Oceana.
Other endangered Spanish fisheries include the Norwegian lobster fishery in
the Cantabrian/Galician area, the megrim fishery, and the anchovy fishery in
the Bay of Biscay and the Bay of Cadiz. Oceana says politicians have failed
when it comes to establishing recovery plans for the most greatly affected
species in order to avoid the closure of fisheries with the consequent
social and economic impact. Date: December 15, 2004 Source: Oceana

. New cork trees for Los Alcornocales -
Reforestation work continues in the Alcornocales natural park in Andalucía
were cork oaks are being planted to replace trees affected by "la seca".
This little-understood condition has killed thousands of trees in recent
years and is thought to be caused by a combination of factors such as age,
climate change, disease and even traditional corking practices. A ten year
reforestation plan was started by the park authorities in 2002. Up to this
autumn a total of 700,000 saplings and 600,000 acorns have been planted,
mainly in the hills surrounding Los Barrios, Alcalá de Los Gazules, Tarifa
and Jimena. Date: December 10, 2004 Source: Andalucía 24 Horas
