------- From the editor's desk

For those of you who like facts and figures, here's some new year trivia
about the website and a couple of requests...

- So far we've chalked up 335 questions, 54 articles, 257 news briefs, 436
pictures, 96 field reports and 88 book titles.

- Most visited sections during 2004 were the Q&A board and the Directory.

- Our real strength are our 235 Directory Members, the community of real
people who help make Wild-Spain useful.

- It would be good to have even more answers on the Q&A board so do chip if
you can (if you are a Directory Member remember to log in for your signature
banner)

- The new Field Reports section now has entries from most parts of Spain.
Keep them coming. No need to be an expert, just tell the world what you
see/hear/smell!

- Our Google rating continues to rise. Currently 5/10. If you have a web
site you can help by linking to us.

- Finally, please take a minute to recommend us to a friend today. Just

slide shows about nature and the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda.

. Forest of forests exhibition -
'Bosque de bosques' is a new exhibition at Madrid's natural history museum
which describes Spain's forests and the species which inhabit them. The
exhibition is organised by naturalist Joaquín Araujo and runs until 30th
March. Date: December 30, 2004 Source: Yahoo España

. Sticky bird traps outlawed -
The EU Justice Tribunal has condemned Spain for allowing the use of
non-selective bird hunting methods. Specifically the EU's sentence outlaws
the 'parany', a traditional trap used in the Valencia region, which uses
lime to capture small birds. SEO says it welcomes the decision for which it
has campaigned for the past ten years. Date: December 30, 2004 Source:

. Sea grass threatened in Catalonia -
Neptune sea grass (Posidonia oceanica) prairies in the Catalonian coast are
in a variable condition, according to a recent study commissioned by the
regional government. Worst affected are those in the Costa Brava, where the
damage is caused by yacht anchors and in the Costa Daurada where fishing
nets and water cloudiness are killing off the grass. The best preserved
areas are in Girona coast, between l´Hospitalet de l´Infant and l´Ametlla de
Mar. Posidonia formations are considered good indicators of the general
health of the coastal sea-life as they retain sand, release oxygen to the
water and provide critical spawning grounds for fish and many other marine
organisms. Date: December 30, 2004 Source: La Vanguardia
