------- News Briefs

. Gibraltar bird migration, volunteers wanted -
Volunteers are needed to identify and count raptors and storks in their
post-breeding migration across the Straight of Gibraltar. The yearly MIGRES
programme, run by the Junta de Andalucía and SEO/Birdlife, is open to
Spanish or English-speaking volunteers of all nationalities. 14-day camps
will run from mid-July to mid-October 2005. Applicants must be 18 or over.
Experience is expected but some training will be provided. Application
deadline is 15 May. More info: Tel./Fax.: +34.954.644.294, email

. Bat hot-spots in Córdoba and Jaén -
A recent survey of cave-dwelling bats in Andalucía has confirmed the
existence of 208 sites in the provinces of Córdoba (55) and Jaén (153) which
are now being catalogued for better protection. These are mostly natural
limestone caves in the south of the provinces, but also disused mines and
tunnels in Sierra Morena. Mild climate and relatively low human impact make
Andalucía one of Europe's most bat-rich regions, both in terms of quantity
and of diversity. Date: April 27, 2005 Source: Andalucía 24 Horas

. Guadarrama National Park? -
A preliminary study for the creation of a new 73,000 hectare national park
in the Guadarrama mountains, between the provinces of Madrid and Segovia, is
under review by the government. This could safeguard the area which is under
much pressure from suburban housing development and non-traditional human
activities, and at present only partially protected as a regional park. The
Guadarrama is home to 45% of Spain's animal species, including Black
vultures and Imperial eagles. Even wolves, say some experts, could return to
the area, which is, in parts, still thickly forested with Scots pine,
Pyreneann oak, Holm oak and ash. Date: April 22, 2005 Source: Desnivel
