The first whiff of Spring is in the air. Butterflies are already in evidence
in Andalucía (see Q&A board) and storks are heaping up the rubbish on their
nests in Castilla la Mancha (see Field Reports). All this despite the snow
and ice which brought road traffic to a standstill in much of Spain barely a
fortnight ago, and which now remains only on our mountaintops.

. National park upgrade for Monfragüe -
Monfragüe park in Cáceres, Extremadura - currently a "parque natural" with
regional protection only - is to become Spain's 14th national park later
this year said environment minister Cristina Narbona. Guadarrama natural
park, between Madrid and Castilla León is expected to follow suit.
Monfragüe's 18,936 hectares of prime mediterranean forest are home to 287
Black vultures, 510 Griffon vultures, 12 Spanish Imperial eagles, 12
Bonelli's eagle and 29 Black storks. Date: February 03, 2006 Source: El

. Protection for unique trees -
Trees considered unique due to their age, size or history could soon become
protected in Spain thanks to the new biodiversity law currently being
drafted by the Ministry of Environment. Researchers and volunteers from the
Leyendas Vivas project (www.leyendasvivas.com) have spent three years
hunting out specimens all over Spain, such as the Encino de Tres Patas, a
huge Holm Oak in Mendaza, Navarra, which is over 800 years old and has a
7.7m diameter trunk, or Valentín, a Pedunculate Oak in Tineo, Asturias, of
similar age with a 17m diameter canopy which has served as a historical
refuge to pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. "We've catalogued some real
hidden beauties" said the project's director, Susana Domínguez Lerena. Date:

. Don Quijote's plants in Madrid botanical garden -
Madrid's Royal Botanical Garden has developed a self-guided itinerary to
showcase over 20 plants mentioned in the novel Don Quijote de la Mancha. The
