------- News Briefs
. The importance of cork -
"Cork screwed - Environmental and economic impacts of the cork stoppers
market" is the title of a report by WWF presented at the 26th International
Wine Fair in London last week. The report reviews the importance of cork oak
landscapes - in Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia and
France - which support one of the highest levels of biodiversity among
forest habitats, including globally endangered species such as the Iberian
Lynx and the Iberian Imperial Eagle. These sustainable agricultural habitats
are now threatened with the advent of cork alternatives for wine stoppers,
specifically plastic and screwtops. Follow link for the full report, in
English. Date: May 24, 2006 Source: WWF
. Spanish plants online -
"Anthos", the official database for Spanish flora continues to grow. The
project is directed by Doctor Castroviejo of Madrid's Royal Botanical
Garden. Plant searches (in Spanish only) can be conducted online by
scientific or common name and by location and include data, drawings and
photos of the different species. Follow link for the original version or go
to www.anthos.es for new version, currently under test. Date: May 24, 2006

. Butterfly collector arrested -
A butterfly collector has been arrested by the police in Peguerinos, Avila,
for using traps baited with live specimens of the Spanish moon moth
(Graellsia isabelae), a protected endemic species. Date: May 09, 2006

. Lammergeyers to be released in Cazorla -
Three lammergeyer chicks are due for release in Cazorla national park, Jaén,
during May 2006. The releases mark a new phase in the reintroduction scheme
which the Junta de Andalucía started in 2002 in the "Guadalentín" captive
breeding centre. The centre currently holds 27 lammergeyers and has raised 7
chicks. These rare bone-eating vultures disappeared from Andalucía in 1986,
victims to poisoning and egg-collectors. Date: May 09, 2006 Source: El Mundo
