Blizzards and storms swept Spain during the last week. The worst now seems
over. Snow finally graces most of our mountaintops.

. Storm petrel is SEO's bird of the year -
The Storm petrel, Hydrobates pelagicus, has been chosen as this year's bird
of the year by the Spanish Ornithological Society, SEO/Birdlife. Spain has a
population of over 5,000 Storm petrels which is considered vulnerable. The
main colonies in Spain are in the Balearics and the Canaries (Chinijo
islands). There are also colonies on the Mediterranean peninsular coast
(Benidorm island) and dotted along the north coast and Galicia. SEO is
currently seeking protection of nesting sites by compiling a
government-sponsored Important Bird Area catalogue for all seabirds, to be

. Hierro giant lizards perish in storm -
178 endangered lizards have drowned in the reintroduction breeding centre in
El Hierro island during the week-end storms which swept the Canaries. The
Hierro giant lizard, Gallotia simonyi, exists nowhere else in the world.
Also affected may be one of the island's wild giant lizard populations, in
the Gorreta gorge. Reintroduction work has been set back five years, said
environment director for El Hierro, Javier Armas Date: January 29, 2007

. Bird migration conference in Algeciras -
Bird Migration and Global Change is the name of a conference to be held on
28-31 March in Algeciras, Spain. The conference aims to analyse and debate
topics such as migration and spread of diseases, behavioural changes in
birds induced by climate, new tools for tracking migration, and conservation
of populations and their habitats in a changing environment. Attendees will
also join a one-day trip to see birds and cetaceans in the Straits of
Gibraltar and the Bay of Algeciras with English-speaking guides. Follow link
