-------- Wild Spain Usability Tip # 1

[an occasional new series on getting the most out of the Wild-Spain website]

What's the easiest way to find an English-speaking contact for hiking /
climbing / birding / snorkelling / other outdoorsy stuff in Spain?
1. Go to http://www.wild-spain.com/wsdirectory.php?op=home
2. Click on the category of your choice
3. Browse the directory pages: 353 people at the latest count. They are the
real knowledge base behind this site. Many live in Spain or travel here
often, some offer professional services, others are knowledgeable
amateurs... most are willing to help and give personal advice.

------- News Briefs

. Footpaths around Talavera -
550 km of footpaths, divided into 21 circular routes, have recently been
waymarked in the Talavera de la Reina, Sierra de San Vicente and La Jara
areas of western Toledo province. The walks are blazed with colour signs for
walkers, cyclists and horse-riders and include local villages and other
points of interest. The project has been funded by the European Leader+
programme. Follow link for downloadable PDF files (in Spanish) and GPS
waypoints. Date: March 21, 2007 Source: IPETA

. Madrid Metro leaflet for walkers, cyclists and birders -
A new free leaflet for walkers and cyclists published by the Comunidad de
Madrid describes four routes in the Parque Regional del Sureste, accessible
from line 9 of Madrid's underground Metro system. The routes include the
Rivas cliffs, Jarama riverside forests and Campillo lagoon, areas well-known
to birdwatchers. For PDF leaflet (in Spanish, with maps and diagrams) follow
link and type "linea 9 sureste" in Madrid.org searchbox. Date: March 13,
2007 Source: Madrid.org

. Four vulture species for Catalonia -
Alinyà and the mountains of Boumort, in Lleida, Catalonia, could soon have
the privilege of being the only place in Europe where all four vultures -
Black, Griffon, Egyptian and lammergeyer - can be found in the wild. Much
depends on the success of a programme for Black vulture reintroduction
started by the Black Vulture Foundation and the Territori i Paisatge
Foundation in 2003. The first four Black Vultures are due for release within
the next few months. Some 20 lammergeyers already live in the area - one
pair has started to breed, possibly encouraged by Territori i Paisatge's
feeding stations. Date: March 13, 2007 Source: Fundacio Caixa Catalunya

. This year's first lynx cubs in Doñana -
Two Iberian lynx cubs have been discovered in Coto del Rey. These are the
first lynx births recorded this year within the Doñana protected buffer
zone. Of the two areas in the world where Iberian lynx still exist - Doñana
(Huelva) and the mountains of Sierra Morena (Jaén), both in Andalucía,
Spain - the Doñana population is the most endangered. The two
sub-populations produced a total of 64 cubs last year, 51 of which came from
Sierra Morena. Date: March 13, 2007 Source: El Mundo
